Forest Adventures

October 26, 2018 - Crossing the River

Our Forest Adventurers had an exciting trek across the Maumee River to Blue Grass Island this week. Enjoyed a celebratory picnic and claimed home to a giant river rock, now known to them as Kid Island. It was quite the adventure this week as we returned to what used to be our "rock bridge" to cross the river.  The river water had lowered enough that the rock bed underneath was exposed and our bridge had now become a large throughfare for our crossing.  Some of us still braved the shallow waters in our waterproof boots, knowing that we had extra socks in case our feet got wet, while others decided to take the nature made bridge.  The explorers were so excited and happy to have made the trek to the island, and we had a celebratory picnic of delicious, healthy snacks.  The children had fun exploring the island and climbing on rocks and ledges with the help of adults and each other.  After hiking back to our fire we explored cooking  apples over the fire with our new mess kits.  The kids had a great time discovering their abilities to cook over an open fire.  We had a wonderful time learning through nature and play, come join us!

Crossing a river is not a very hard thing to do, especially when it is on a low tide. However, we should still be cautious and take extra care when doing so. When rivers are in a state of low water levels, we can step on stones to cross them. However, there are some difficulties in doing this. The rocks which were previously submerged are still wet and slippery, we can easily slip and hurt ourselves if we are not paying attention.
